London, 14 March, 11.30am: National Golf Month, the British Golf Industry Association’s annual campaign aiming to get people golfing this May, has today welcomed Muirfield Golf Club’s ruling that it will admit female members.

This year National Golf Month is focussed on getting women into the game and will be offering over 50,000 free taster sessions across the country come 1st May 2017.

Doug Poole, the campaign’s project director, said: ‘Murifield’s decision today sends the right signal to women that the game is becoming more open and less stuffy. We can’t grow the game as long as it is seen as a male only bastion. This May, National Golf Month is making a substantial effort to get women and girls to try the sport. If this decision had gone the other way it would have been a disastrous ‘scene setter’ for the campaign, so I am delighted at today’s result.’

National Golf Month is an annual programme aimed at growing participation in the sport coordinated by the British Golf Industry Association. For May 2017, it will focus on encouraging women to take up the game as its primary target for this year’s month long campaign, which starts on May 1st 2017.

Over 50,000 free trial sessions will be offered exclusively to female participants by hundreds of golf clubs and pros throughout the UK via the website.   The web site will open for consumer registration next month.
